Global Geo-political Series: US ambassador to UN says ‘time for talks over’

United States’ ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley rejected a report that suggests that the United States is seeking an emergency meeting of the United Nation’s Security Council (UNSC) over North Korea and suggested that time for talks is over.

Last Friday, North Korea launched a second intercontinental ballistic missile, capable of carrying a nuclear weapon and claimed that all the cities of the United States are within the striking range of the United States. This led to speculation that the U.S. would go to the U.N. to seek an emergency session and a resolution to put more pressure on the rogue state. United States’ CBS news reported that U.S. seeking an emergency meeting of the UNSC.

Haley shot down the report as false and said, “There is no point in having an emergency session if it produces nothing of consequence”. She added that there is no point having a meeting which would not pressurize North Korea as China stands ready to veto any such resolution. She said, “An additional Security Council resolution that does not significantly increase the international pressure on North Korea is of no value……In fact, it is worse than nothing, because it sends the message to the North Korean dictator that the international community is unwilling to seriously challenge him.

In a previous emergency session on July 5th, called by the United States after North Korea test fired its first ICBM failed to pass any resolution as both China and Russia expressed doubts, whether the missile launched, was truly an ICBM.

The U.S. has already warned that it would go on its own path if UNSC fails to act.
