Global Geo-political Series: UNSC unanimously approves tougher sanctions on North Korea

United Nation’s Security Council has unanimously approved a U.S. backed new tougher sanctions against North Korea after it conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test last week, following several ballistic missile testing in previous weeks and months, one of which flew through the airspace of Japan before plunging into the sea. UNSC had already backed tougher resolution last month aimed at reducing North Korea’s export revenues by almost a third.

The new sanction bans North Korean textile exports, which is the second largest revenue generator for DPRK and puts a cap on North Korea’s import of crude oil and other oil products. The oil products will be capped at 2 million barrels per year. The United States was pushing for a complete oil embargo on North Korea but it seems that there was little or no appetite for such measures at the UNSC. Russian President Vladimir Putin also voiced against complete oil embargo as it would bring hardship for ordinary people of DPRK. President Putin suggested that imposing sanctions won’t solve the North Korean crisis and pressed for diplomatic means to resolve the issue.
