Global Geo-political Series: Trump might end sanctions on Russia

With less than a week to his formal inauguration, the President-elect Donald Trump indicated that he might do away with the economic sanctions on Russia at least for a period of time, which would be the biggest change in tone towards Russia from a President of the United States in the history. Mr. Trump said in an hour-long interview with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), "If you get along and if Russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions if somebody’s doing some really great things?" Trump suggested he might do away with the sanctions - imposed by the Obama administration in response to Moscow’s alleged cyber-attacks if Moscow proves helpful in battling terrorists and reaching other goals important to Washington. He is ready to meet with President Vladimir Putin, once he gets into the Office.

In a separate interview with “The Times of London”, Donald Trump once again indicated that he might do away with the sanctions on Russia; however, he said that he would look for a nuclear arms reduction deal in exchange. This is 180-degree change in view from Mr. Trump, who previously called for expansion and strengthening of nuclear capability in a December 22nd tweet.
