Global Geo-political Series: Trump-Putin talks geo-politics over phone

US President Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin had a cordial discussion regarding geopolitics around the world in a phone call that was described as ‘businesslike and constructive’ by Moscow and ‘a good one’ by the White House. The improvement in relations between Russia and the United States looks to be under way and continuation of what began with the US secretary Rex Tillerson who visited Moscow last month after US missile attack on Syria and held six hours talks with the Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin.

Trump and Putin reportedly talked on the peace process in Syria on Tuesday and President Trump agreed to send a representative of the United States in the new round of Russia-organized Syria peace talks in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana. According to the White House reporting, both leaders have agreed that the civil war in Syria has continued for too long and all the parties must do everything to end the violence and suffering in Syria. They also reportedly talked about creating safe zones in Syria that would be talked in greater details in Astana. This would be the first time that the United States would have a meaningful presence in the Astana talks. Stuart Jones, the acting assistant secretary for near eastern affairs would attend the talks. Kremlin said that Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin had agreed to intensify joint efforts by their foreign ministers to make the Russian-brokered ceasefire regime in Syria more stable and controllable.

This was President Trump’s second phone call with his Russian counterpart since he took office in January. The two leaders are expected to meet in July.
