Global Geo-political Series: South Korea fires at unknown projectile from North Korea

South Korean military has reportedly fired as many as 90 shots to an unidentified projectile that flew from North Korea and crossed the border as well as the demilitarized zone between the two nations, which have been at war since the Korean war of the 1950s.

The South Korean Joint Chief of Staff said that after spotting the object, the army broadcast warning signals and fired shots in accordance with its procedures and added that military positions have been strengthened and air surveillance has been increased. South Korea’s largest news organization Yonhap reported that shots were fired at a local time around 4 pm when the device flew near South Korea’s Eastern Gangwon province. The news agency also reported the object as a drone.

The tensions on the Korean Peninsula reached a boiling point earlier this year as the US President sent an armada of submarines and the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson in the Korean waters to oppose the aggressive actions of North Korea and warned that isolated sanctions-hit country against its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests. The United States has also called on China, which is North Korea’s major trading partner to take up actions. North Korea has so far defied international pressures and conducted two more ballistic missile tests in the past two weeks.
