Global Geo-political Series: Russia uses Theresa May’s EU meddling accusation to make mockery of accusation against itself

Earlier this week, the UK Prime Minister Theresa May accused the European Union of meddling in the UK general election. After leaks emerged from a high-profile meeting between the Prime Minister and the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker emerged in media and the EU reportedly increased the Brexit bill demand from a previous €60 billion to €100 billion, Mrs. May, speaking at her residence at 10 Downing Street warned the people of the United Kingdom that there are some counterparties do not want Britain to prosper and added that the recent threats issued by the European Union were deliberately timed to affect the outcome of the general election. According to her, bureaucrats of Brussels were acting in a coordinated fashion to affect the result of the election. She said, “ The European Commission’s negotiating stance has hardened…..Britain’s negotiating position has been misrepresented in the European press… The events of the last few days have shown that some in Brussels do not want these talks to succeed.”

Russia has seized this opportunity and hit back at allegations of election meddling against itself. The Russian embassy in London mocked May’s allegations by tweeting: ‘Praise God it’s not Russia this time’ next to a picture of the front page splash on Thursday’s Times that says “Brussels is meddling in our election, warns May”. Russia has been accused by western leaders as well as the media of meddling in the US and other European election.
