Global Geo-political Series: Russia backs China UNSC resolution but no agreement yet

As the tensions in the Korean Peninsula continues to simmer, countries in the region including Japan, China, Russia, and South Korea have urged both the United States and North Korea to tone down their war rhetoric and to find a diplomatic solution to the situation. However, on Sunday, North Korea defied global pressure including the one coming from its closest ally China and tested another ballistic missile, which failed. In response to the tensions in the region, the United Nation’s Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency meeting.

Russian foreign ministry said that the members of the United Nation’s Security Council (UNSC) have unanimously called upon North Korea to stop testing both ballistic technology and nuclear weapons and to fulfill UNSC resolution. Russia backed a UNSC proposal forwarded by China which calls for double suspension; North Korea stops missile and nuclear tests while the United States and South Korea stops military drills in the region. However, no joint agreement has been reached so far.

Chinese foreign minister at UNSC council has said that peaceful solution is the only right choice and called upon both the parties to find diplomatic ways to end the dispute.

Meanwhile, speaking before the UNSC, the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson threatened to suspend diplomatic relations and impose additional sanctions affecting third parties dealing with North Korea unless Pyongyang abandons its nuclear weapons program, and added that all options should be on the table including military actions for future provocations.

The Japanese Prime Minister added in response to the failed ballistic missile test that it remains a grave threat to Japan.

Meanwhile, North Korea has threatened to sink the US aircraft carrier in the region along with the submarines.
