China’s biggest political event, Communist Party Congress kick-started today in Beijing. President Xi Jinping delivered a three and half hour speech elaborating his vision of China and marked the beginning of the seven-day congress. The events also marked the completion of President Xi’s first five-year term. The Congress is being attended by almost 2300 party members. The event is attended by former Presidents like Hu Jintao and Jiang Zemin.  Here are some key points from his speech,

  • China has entered a new era. The country had become a great world power. Socialism with Chinese characteristics has helped to achieve this. The country should not copy foreign political systems but stick to its own.

  • He highlighted environment as one of the greatest challenges that the party must face as the air pollution level remains high and air qualities in cities like Beijing, Shanghai remains at an unacceptable level. He said that China still has a long way to go in protecting the environment. According to him, this is an era that will see China moving closer to the centre of the world and make more contributions to humankind.

  • During Xi’s time in Office, China’s economic output expanded from yuan 54 trillion to yuan 80 trillion. Every year, new 13 million jobs were created during his tenure and 60 million people were lifted from poverty.

  • Xi highlighted achievements in anti-corruption campaign, where 150 senior officials including 18 members of the Chinese Party have either been suspended or jailed. Xi promises to continue the anti-corruption campaign and hunt down tigers (corrupted senior officials), flies (low-level officers), and foxes (corruption suspects who fled abroad).

  • Xi also hailed ‘Once China’ policy and added that China will defend its sovereignty and the completeness of its territories, and will not tolerate a repeat of history where the country was broken up. He said that China has sufficient abilities to dismiss any form of Taiwanese Independence attempt. In the case of Hong Kong, Mr. Xi said that China will fully and faithfully implement ‘One country, two systems’ principle but thwart any attempt for Independence.

  • As per his vision, China will be moderately prosperous by 2035 and by 2050, it will be prosperous, strong and Democratic.
