Global Geo-Politics Series: Turkey’s press freedom and Merkel’s worst choice

Arzu Yildiz, Turkey’s journalist got sentenced to 20 months in prison and got stripped of legal rights over her children, for publishing a footage of a court trial of four prosecutors, who ordered search of Trucks belonging to Turkey’s MIT intelligence agency. It was a major international embarrassment of President Tayyip Erdogan, which showed Turkey was sending arms in Syria back in 2014.

Another two prominent journalists received five year sentences over the matter.

This exposes the naked villainy of Turkey’s political system as well as precarious state of human rights. Erdogan, hungry for more power has already pushed moderate Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to resign over their spat over issues such as jailing academics and journalists without trial. Binali Yildirim, a loyalist to Erdogan sworn in this week.

European Union and Ahmet Davutoglu, formed a deal, in which Turkey will take back the refused migrants in return of aid in billions of Dollars and passport free travel to European Union. With Davutoglu gone, an Erdogan not ready to accept other terms which relate to human rights over militancy the deal is in jeopardy.

These levels of human rights violation, power hungry attitudes and violations of press freedom are completely in contrast to European values and human rights.

People across Europe are becoming increasingly worried over the prospect of exit of Britain and entry of the Turks.

According to a survey by Lord Ashcroft Polls, which asked European people “How favorable is your view of each of the following countries?” with 100 being highest and 0 being lowest, Russia got a score of 44, ahead of Turkey’s 40 and way below UK’s 72.

In our view, Merkel and other European leaders should revisit their choices of friends and foes and also who they make deal with.
