German Election: Latest poll shows increased popularity of Merkel

The latest opinion poll conducted by the Forsa Institute show that the Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Martin Schultz ambition to become the next chancellor of Germany is about to get crushed in the upcoming election. It shows,

  • Ms. Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its smaller coalition partner Christian Social Union (CSU) are six points ahead of Martin Schultz’s SPD, which would receive 30 percent of the votes.
  • In terms of popularity rating, Chancellor Angela Merkel is ahead with 43 percent, which is 11 points more than that of Mr. Schultz.
  • The poll shows that the support for anti-immigrant party Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) has declined to just 8 percent.

Last year, as AfD secured in 16 regional parliaments last year, there were fears that the Merkel era is coming to an end in Germany. However, several polls released in 2017 crushes that idea as Merkel’s popularity recovered after her change in stance towards open-door immigration policy.

We at FxWirePro reviewed additional interviews, blogs, and different polls in 2017 and all of them point to the likelihood that Angela Merkel is set to become Germany’s longest serving chancellor by winning in the September election.
