FxWirePro: Germany’s new plan to punish migrant dissenters

Germany’s Angela Merkel led ruling party has devised a plan in terms of EU budget proposal to punish dissenters like Poland, Czech Republic, and Hungary who have clashed with Brussels since 2014/15 over EU migrant quotas and refused to take in refugees. Germany wants countries to be rewarded with more EU regional aid if they host large numbers of migrants. Such a move would shift funds from the eastern and central European countries.

The move is quite extraordinary as funds that would be redirected has always been known as Cohesion funds and has been used for infrastructure projects, education for EU nationals only. Under the plan as reported by Financial Times, which first broke the story, the structural and investment funds would support governments that have assumed responsibility for taking in and integrating beneficiaries of international protection of migrants with a right to stay. The funds in talks are quite large amounting to somewhere between €300 and 400 billion.
