European Election: Pro-EU parties set to lose ground in Pan-EU election

The three-day long European parliamentary election will begin tomorrow, which is sure to be one of the most decisive elections of modern times. The newly elected members would not only play a major role in Britain’s exit from the block but the future of the block as well. All eyes would be watching the strength of the euro-skeptics in this year’s election.

According to polls, pro-European parties would significantly see support erode in this year’s election.

  • European People’s Party (EPP) would once again be the largest in the 751 members strong parliament with 171 seats, down 46 seats compared to the last election.
  • Socialists and Democrats (S&D), another pro-EU party forecasted to win 151 seats, down 38 compared to the last election.
  • Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe (ALDE) expected to win 97 seats, 29 more than last time largely due to French President Emmanuel Macron’s En Marche Party.
  • Group of Euro-skeptic parties (GUE NGL, ECR, EFDD, ENF) are expected to make considerable gains.
