Minneapolis, Minnesota, Feb. 28, 2018 -- Edmentum (edmentum.com), a global education leader and the original pioneer in online teaching and learning programs, announces a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU’s) LearnLab. For their first collaboration, Edmentum will sponsor a Masters of Educational Technology and Applied Learning Science (METALS) project through July where five graduate students will use the latest in research and data science to more fully understand and predict the goals Study Island teachers have for their students. These findings will equip teachers with more robust analytics and individual student data, helping them individualize instruction to power more personalized learning experiences in the classroom.

Led by Dr. Ken Koedinger, CMU’s LearnLab has established itself at the forefront of learning sciences. It is one of six National Science Foundation (NSF) funded labs that supports basic and applied learning research. It partners with local districts to help raise achievement through educational technology applications of learning science including districts in west Pittsburgh, Montour and South Fayette.
“Research is a core component of Edmentum’s philosophy. This collaboration with CMU’s talented students opens up a world of possibilities to engage in even more meaningful ways,” says Paul Johansen, VP, product management and chief technology officer at Edmentum. “I’m confident our partnership with Dr. Koedinger and the team at LearnLab will help us better understand the needs of educators across the country.”
METALS is a one-year, interdisciplinary master’s program that trains graduate students to become learning engineers. The professional program culminates with a seven-month capstone project for external clients like Edmentum. Guided by industry and faculty mentors in this team-based research and development project, students experience the end-to-end process of a product cycle from idea conception to prototyping. During their partnership with Edmentum, METALS students will spend time observing Study Island teachers in the classroom, and then use their insights to develop educational models that will empower educators with better data.
“Education is a critical need in our society, and I’m excited to work with Edmentum to help them continue to serve educators,” says Dr. Koedinger. “CMU students are adept at analyzing and organizing data. Their work will open up an array of opportunities for Edmentum to further engage with educators and ultimately give them the tailored support they desire.”
