The Walt Disney Company is reportedly approaching a critical leadership decision, as its board prepares to vote next week on appointing a new chief executive officer. According to a Bloomberg News report citing people familiar with the matter, Disney’s board is close to promoting Josh D’Amaro, the current chairman of Disney’s theme park division, to the role of CEO. The development has drawn significant attention from investors and industry observers as Disney continues to navigate a complex post-pandemic recovery and long-term succession planning.
While Bloomberg reported that D’Amaro is a leading contender, Reuters noted it could not independently verify the information. Disney also declined to confirm the report, with a spokesperson stating that the board has not yet selected the next CEO and will publicly announce the decision once it is finalized. The uncertainty has kept speculation alive around Disney’s leadership transition, one of the most closely watched topics in the global media and entertainment industry.
CEO succession has been a sensitive issue for Disney in recent years. Bob Iger, one of the company’s most influential leaders, returned to the top job in 2022 after the board removed his handpicked successor, Bob Chapek. Chapek’s tenure was marked by challenges stemming from the pandemic, which significantly disrupted Disney’s theme parks, film releases, and streaming strategy. Since Iger’s return, investors have been eager for clarity on a stable, long-term leadership plan.
According to a Wall Street Journal report published last month, Iger has told associates that he intends to step down as CEO and reduce his involvement in daily operations before his contract expires on December 31. That timeline has added urgency to the board’s decision-making process and intensified focus on internal candidates such as D’Amaro, who is widely credited with revitalizing Disney’s parks and experiences segment.
As Disney prepares for this potential leadership transition, markets are watching closely for signals about the company’s strategic direction, operational priorities, and commitment to shareholder value under its next CEO.
