Crypto Fundraising Dials Down the Mega-Rounds but Keeps the Capital Flowing: AI, DAOs, and Hardware Steal the Week

For the week ending May 23–24, 2026, venture flows into crypto-facing projects were muted, moving away from the billion-dollar blockbusters that dominated prior headlines to smaller, institutional-grade protocol rounds. Among the notable names, regulated prediction markets platform Kalshi secured a new funding entry on May 21 with a high institutional "Moni score," while on-chain governance startup TownSquare finalized a significant seed or Series A-style round on the same day. Foundation Devices, a supplier of Bitcoin hardware and sovereign-key infrastructure, also made the most recent five-day financing lists, highlighting the ongoing confidence in self-custody ecosystems despite decreasing ticket sizes.

Under the headline names, a dense cluster of early-stage transactions completed between May 20 and May 22 exposes where venture appetite is now focused. AI-infra and smart-data projects ruled the batch, with K25.ai, Exa, Cycles, TokenOps, Cometh, and Jia grabbing funding for on-chain analytics, agent-layer stacks, and AI-enabled trading tools. Simultaneously, governance and DAO infrastructure, as seen by TownSquare and neighboring rounds, piqued fresh investor interest in formal voting and on-chain decision-making systems, indicating the market's readiness for more advanced decentralized coordination.

The funding map for the week taken together points to three long-lasting investment themes: AI-driven crypto tooling, strong on-chain governance, and hardware-backed self-custody. Rather than pursuing large valuation headlines, money seems to be digging down into fundamental layers that could support the next cycle. Although deal sizes were relatively small, the scope of institutional-supported activity over these verticals suggests that venture allocators are still investing, just with a more concentrated focus on infrastructure connecting conventional risk frameworks with on-chain sovereignty.
