Briferendum Aftermath Series: Key dates ahead

Today, at 11:30 GMT, the UK government is expected to trigger the Article 50 formally by submitting an exit intended letter to the European Council President Donald Tusk. The event means nothing in itself but what happens next is something that counts not just because they have serious implications for the UK but on global politics. Since this is a first time ever phenomenon, no one knows for sure what happens but here are the key dates to remember, which are also approximation, so that one can keep oneself updated on the happenings,

  • Next two days would be vital as EU council President Donald Tusk has promised a response to the Article 50 triggering and share the negotiating outlook/aim of the European Union with member countries.
  • We expect the finance and foreign minister to keep working in the background. One might have a glimpse of those background works on April 29th, probably the first most crucial date as the European leaders would gather for the first time since Article 50 triggering in Brussels.
  • October 2018 has been agreed as a deadline before which the exit deal is expected to be finalized.
  • While the negotiations will be well underway over the coming months, the real political negotiations are unlikely to happen before October, once the German election is done with.
  • The final date is 1st April 2019, a day from which the current relation between the UK and the EU would cease to exist unless the timeline is extended by unanimous voting by the members.
