Briferendum Aftermath Series: EU likely to delay Brexit beyond two years

The biggest priority of the European Union leaders is to make sure that no other country follows the United Kingdom to move out of the European Union and to make it happen it is likely that the EU leaders would try and make an example of Britain. An example to show that the UK is much worse off by leaving the EU and in this effort, they would try to impose as many hurdles as possible before the United Kingdom can exit the EU.

One of the biggest problems of the UK is that the country will not be able to make separate trade deals with countries of the world unless the Brexit divorce is done with. A report from Germany’s Bundestag suggests that the final exit deal may require the approval of all the remaining 27 members and that complicates the exit process. This will make Britain’s trade deal hugely more difficult and will make the process hugely longer because they will have to keep an eye not only on what the EU wants but also what all the national capitals and even the regional parliaments want.

Since the beginning of the Brexit process, the European Union has been bombarding the United Kingdom with exit bills worth as much as £60 billion, whereas the UK argues that by the time it leaves the European Union, it would have contributed as much as £200 billion towards EU budget and hence owes nothing more. The EU has recently demanded that the United Kingdom need to pay a fine of £1.7 billion for the failure of UK customs to prevent counterfeit goods from China entering the European market.

The biggest problem that the UK faces is that unless a divorce is done, the EU rules would continue to apply and those rules clearly favor the EU.
