Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from a hospital in Brasília on Thursday and transferred back into custody to continue serving his prison sentence, according to local media and Reuters witnesses. The move came after Bolsonaro underwent medical procedures to treat complications related to a hernia and persistent hiccups, conditions linked to his long-standing abdominal health issues.
A Reuters witness reported seeing official vehicles leaving DF Star hospital early Thursday evening. The convoy traveled directly to the Federal Police Superintendency in Brasília, where Bolsonaro is incarcerated. The 70-year-old former leader is serving a 27-year prison sentence following his conviction for plotting a coup after losing Brazil’s 2022 presidential election.
Earlier in the day, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes denied a request from Bolsonaro’s legal team seeking permission for him to serve his sentence under what they described as “humanitarian house arrest.” In his ruling, Moraes stated that once medical clearance was granted, Bolsonaro should return immediately to custody at the Federal Police Superintendency. The decision reinforced the court’s position that medical treatment alone does not justify altering the terms of his imprisonment.
Neither DF Star hospital nor the Federal Police provided official comments regarding Bolsonaro’s discharge or transfer. However, sources familiar with the matter confirmed that the procedures were authorized by Justice Moraes following a formal request from Bolsonaro’s lawyers, allowing temporary hospitalization for health reasons.
Bolsonaro’s medical history has been a recurring issue since he was stabbed in the abdomen during a campaign rally in 2018. Since that attack, he has undergone multiple surgeries and hospitalizations related to intestinal complications, hernias, and other abdominal conditions. These health concerns have frequently been cited by his defense in legal proceedings.
The former president was admitted to hospital last week for the latest procedures, which doctors reportedly deemed necessary but not life-threatening. With medical treatment completed, authorities moved swiftly to return Bolsonaro to prison, underscoring the judiciary’s firm stance as his case continues to draw national and international attention.
