“Black Mirror” Season 5 is expected to come out this year although no exact date has been provided by Netflix just yet. Show creator Charlie Brooker previously told RadioTimes that the fifth installment’s arrival is “imminent,” adding that they’ve already made considerable progress with regards to filming.
“We’d already shot like, one of the episodes of season five before we did ‘Bandersnatch.’ At one point we weren’t sure whether we were going to make ‘Bandersnatch’ part of [Black Mirror Season 5]. It was Netflix’s suggestion as well: ‘let’s do it as its own thing’. As it expanded and got bigger and bigger and bigger it became apparent that the way to do this was to do it as a standalone thing,” Brooker explained.
“Bandersnatch,” of course, is the interactive movie that Netflix released back in December. It was received with general positivity partly due to its unique nature of telling the story. In it, the viewers themselves were given the option what decisions the main character should take. This resulted in multiple endings with most of it concluding in a dark tone. So will “Black Mirror” Season 5 see another “Bandersnatch” story?
It’s unlikely seeing that Netflix decided to have “Bandersnatch” as a standalone film. The plot for the upcoming installment is also being kept under wraps although reports have come in that Miley Cyrus will be included in one of the episodes. What’s more, “Black Mirror” Season 5 is expected to be more optimistic with its storyline and delve deeper into the effects of technological advancement, Latin Times reported.
While a lighter theme may deter fans that have been accustomed to the dark and twisted stories that the series has explored so far, Brooker assured that “Black Mirror” Season 5 will be fresh and interesting. As for its release date, Netflix remains reticent about the matter. But judging by Brooker’s “imminent” comment, the series may drop in the first half of 2019.
