BitGo Engineer Preorders Tesla Model 3 Using Bitcoin

Mainstream bitcoin adoption still remains a much debated topic. However, the use of digital currencies as a payment method has been consistently growing. Although their potential to replace conventional fiat currencies seems unlikely in the near future, their rising popularity among masses cannot be denied.

Speaking of using bitcoin as a payment payment, a BitGo engineer has announced that he has successfully preordered the recently launched Tesla Model 3 with the digital currency.

Mason Borda made the announcement via blog post on Medium. He said that he preordered a Tesla Model 3 for 2.413612 Bitcoin.

For this purpose, he used Shakepay, a new application which enables load up a one-time-use credit card for Bitcoin. Using the SMS interface for his BitGo web wallet, he loaded up a card on Shakepay with Bitcoin, and used the card to preorder a Tesla Model 3.

“The entire process took me 60 seconds once my card was loaded. There was no credit check involved, or a waiting period for the credit card to arrive in the mail — it just worked”, Borda noted.

Borda, a self-confessed fan of new and emerging technologies, said that he has been entrenched in the world of bitcoin. He calls this whole process of preordering the vehicle as “weird”, summarizing the whole experience:

“I just preordered an automobile that I have never seen or touched…I preordered this vehicle with an invisible currency that was invented by a pseudo-anonymous computer programmer who calls himself Satoshi Nakamoto and is likely not Japanese.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently unveiled the latest model at the company’s design studio in California. Priced at $35,000, Tesla Model 3 will deliver at least 215 miles of range and deliveries will begin by end of 2017.

Earlier in January, it was widely reported that the Auto-outlet Helsinki Oy in Tampere and Vantaa sold a Tesla with the digital currency for a retail price of more than € 140,000.
