2017 Academy Awards: Host Jimmy Kimmel Roasts “Overrated” Meryl Streep, Donald Trump, And Most Especially, “Bitter Rival” Matt Damon At Oscars

If you take out the announcement and awarding parts, the 89th annual Academy Awards might as well have been another “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” episode.

The late-night host carried an otherwise amazing show on the typically stuffy awards night on Sunday, starting off with a scathing monologue targeting (in jest of) Meryl Streep, Donald Trump, and his “bitter rival,” “The Great Wall” star (and multiple Oscar winner) Matt Damon, PEOPLE reported.

Kimmel said about Streep, who was nominated for her role in “Florence Foster Jenkins,”We’re also here to honor the actors who seem great, but actually really aren’t. And of all the “great actors” here in Hollywood, one in particular has stood the test of time for her many uninspiring and overrated performances. From her mediocre early work in The Deer Hunter and Out of Africa to her underwhelming performances in Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie’s Choice, Meryl Streep has phoned it in from more than 50 films over the course of her lackluster career.”

He also jokingly asked Streep if she’s wearing an “Ivanka,” hinting the presidential daughter’s flailing fashion brand after it gets pulled out by high fashion retailers such as Nordstrom.

The “overrated” references was a jab at Trump’s tweet about the multi-awarded star, who did not name the elected president but was the subject of her passionate speech at an earlier awards show. Kimmel later on showed Streep and the rest of the attendees that he tweeted back at Trump, and added the hashtag #Merylsayshi. Twitter has already claimed that the tweets became the host’s most retweeted ever.

But Kimmel clearly had “fake” beef against Damon, and was a repeated target of his spiels and jokes, CNN noted. In the monologue, he casually mentioned that Damon was a “selfish” person, and referred to his weight gain. When Kimmel introduced a star-struck group of tourists to the crowd, he pointedly asked them to ignore Damon. An entire skit about one of Damon’s movies, “We Bought A Zoo,” had Kimmel mocking the actor’s choice for a movie. When Damon co-presented an award with his good friend Ben Affleck, Kimmel directed the orchestra to play him off as the former reads his lines.
