Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has addressed growing concerns after its Grok chatbot referenced a debunked conspiracy theory about a “white genocide” in South Africa. The company said on Thursday that the incident stemmed from an unauthorized modification to Grok's response system, which bypassed internal review protocols.
xAI confirmed the change was made early Wednesday and directed the chatbot to provide a politically charged answer, violating the company’s core values and content policies. The issue sparked backlash after users on X (formerly Twitter) shared screenshots of Grok raising the controversial topic during unrelated conversations.
The controversial term "white genocide" has often been used by critics of South Africa's land reform policies. Musk, who was born in South Africa, has previously voiced opposition to such policies. However, the South African government maintains there is no evidence supporting claims of racial persecution against white citizens. International bodies have similarly dismissed the genocide narrative as unsubstantiated.
To ensure transparency and prevent future incidents, xAI announced several corrective measures. These include publishing Grok’s system prompts on GitHub for public review and feedback, as well as implementing 24/7 human monitoring to catch and address problematic responses not flagged by automated tools.
Since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022, concerns over political bias, misinformation, and hate speech in AI models have intensified. This latest controversy underscores the challenges AI developers face in maintaining neutrality and trust in generative AI tools.
xAI’s swift response and new safeguards aim to restore public confidence while reinforcing the company’s commitment to responsible AI development.
