Kodak, the company that captured memorable moments during family vacations before phone cameras came along, has come out with their attempt at creating a smartphone. Called the “Ektra,” the handheld gadget packs a mean 21MP rear camera and a host of other impressive internal features.
Kodak has been losing out in the fast-moving world of digital video and photo-capturing, where most people are forgoing dedicated cameras that the company sells for more versatile gadgets such as smartphones. With this being the case, it was only natural that Kodak would want to capture some parts of that market for itself while retaining its identity as a camera seller, USA Today reports.
This is the reason why the “Ektra” is being marketed as a smartphone for photo enthusiasts, which the company itself readily admits. The 21MP rear camera is a testament to the purpose that the camera has been created for as well, which is actually a Sony IMX230 sensor.
In terms of the exterior, the back of the device is reminiscent of classic Kodak cameras as well, thanks to its artificial leatherette look. It even has a curved grip and a shutter button, which will likely tickle the nostalgia bones of anyone who used those old film cameras in the past.
As Tech Crunch points out, however, there are plenty of other smartphones on the market that sport impressive cameras of their own. This is why it was important for Kodak to include other impressive features, including the Helio X20 decacore processor from MediaTek. The phone has 3GB of RAM, which is less generally considered a mid-range offering at this point.
Storage starts at 32GB for the standard package, but users can always add up to 128GB via MicroSD cards. Battery life is also pretty decent, with the 3,000 mAh juice that it has. The 5-inch screen won’t support 4K viewing, but it does provide 1080p resolution.
