‘Captain Planet Movie’ is set to be produced by well-known outspoken environmentalist, actor, and producer Leonardo DiCaprio through his own production company Appian Way Productions.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DiCaprio is set to produce a planned big-screen adaptation of the hit 1990s animated environmentalist television series ‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ via Appian Way Productions. He is set to produce the film together with Jennifer Davisson Killoran.
The 41-year old film actor and producer is also well known for his environmental activist work, having founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to promote environmental awareness. His non-profit foundation focuses on global warming, renewable energy, and preserving Earth’s biodiversity. He received numerous accolades for his environmental work including the Environmental Leadership Award from Global Green USA.
DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions is teaming up with Paramount Pictures to negotiate deals for the rights of the hit television series. The original cartoon was created by Ted Turner, Robert Larkin III, and Barbara Pyle and ran from September 1990 to December 1992 on TBS. The sequel series entitled ‘The New Adventures of Captain Planet’ was produced by Hanna-Barbera and Turner Program Services and ran from September 1993 to May 1996.
According to Live Science, the original series featured a green-haired environmental superhero named Captain Planet who was summoned by a group of teenagers by the use of five magic rings sent in by Gaia, the spirit of the planet. Gaia chose youths from all over the world to control elements of nature specifically earth, fire, wind, and water as well as the element of heart. Together, they worked with Captain Planet to fight off environmental villains.
Jono Matt will be co-writing the screenplay together with ‘Scream Queens’ star Glen Powell, according to Vanity Fair. It remains unclear whether Powell will also be starring in the new film.
‘Captain Planet’ is a planned big-screen adaptation of the animated environmentalist television series ‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’, which aired on TBS in the 1990s. No official release date nor director has been announced as of the present.
