Smartphone makers are in a race to unveil new flagship devices powered by a next-generation chip from Qualcomm. And Xiaomi confirmed that its Xiaomi 13 lineup, likely to include Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, will be launched this week.
Xiaomi was one of the first companies that confirm it would be using Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in upcoming flagship phones shortly after Qualcomm unveiled the SoC earlier this month. Earlier this week, Xiaomi released the first official teasers for the Xiaomi 13 launch, announcing that the lineup will be launched this week.
The company announced on its official page on Weibo (via Android Authority) that the launch event for the Xiaomi 13 series is happening on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. Beijing time or 6 a.m. ET. This is slightly different from the company’s previous launches because its flagships were typically unveiled in the final week of the year.
The Xiaomi 13’s launch timeline does not seem to be the only difference this year. Teasers for the upcoming event suggest the company will only unveil two new phones, and there are no references for a successor of the Xiaomi 12X so far.
Last year, the company released three models as part of the Xiaomi 12 series, with an X-series variant with slightly lower specs that was powered by Snapdragon 870 instead of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. And it appears that Xiaomi is not planning on launching a successor.
There are other clues that can be picked up from the teaser. One of the devices will have a display with curved edges, which likely belongs to the Xiaomi 13 Pro. But the other model, likely the regular Xiaomi 13, could retain a flat display.
Renders of the Xiaomi 13 were revealed by a reliable leaker earlier this month. And it suggests that the company will redesign the devices’ camera bump, changing it from a rectangular island to a square one.
The official unveiling of the Xiaomi 13 series this week will likely be followed by its retail launch in China before the end of the year. Similar to previous launches, though, the new flagship phones might not be released in global markets for a few months.
