Wind energy is one of the most promising renewable energy resources in the world and it is on the right track. One need only to take a look at the behemoth of a turbine that MHI Vestas Offshore Wind created, which can generate enough energy to power a home for two decades in only 24 hours.
The wind turbine in question is the V164, which can generate a whopping 216,000 kWh of energy in the space of 24 hours, Futurism reports. This is enough power to keep the lights of one average household in the US on for 20 years, and that’s just from one of these giant wind machines. If there were a thousand of them, the turbines could likely support several thousand homes with the energy that they generate in a single day.
Standing at 220 meters (722 feet) in height, this offshore wind turbine is the biggest in the world. Each of the propellers on the turbine is 80 meters (263 feet) in length and weighs about 38 tons. As a result, the total area that is covered by the wind turbine when spinning is larger than the famous London Eye Ferris wheel that is found in the UK.
As for what the existence of this monster means for renewable energy, it will have a considerable impact on the number of turbines needed in order to produce the level of power that any given region requires, Digital Trends reports. This could then lead to an increase in energy production thanks to the reduction of costs, which will further reduce the need for large numbers of the V164 or wind turbines like it.
It’s a cycle of decreasing cons and increasing pros, though, it is worth noting that it will eventually hit a ceiling. According to the company’s CTO, Torben Hvid, the current data is proof that their giant wind turbine is ready to enter the market.
