‘Will & Grace’ revival is set to feature the return of Debra Messing as the titular Grace Adler, a straight interior designer who is the best friend of Eric McCormack’s gay lawyer Will Truman. Messing revealed in a recent interview that the upcoming revival will pick up 11 years following the show’s original end in 2006. It will cover socio-political subject matter on top of the usual comedic storyline.
According to TV Guide, the 48-year old award-winning actress revealed that the show will go on a time jump since its final broadcast more than a decade ago. She said, "All I know is that I was told that they've come up with a very creative way of dealing with how the show ended, and that it will be in real time. So it will be 11 years after.”
NBC confirmed the revival back in January 2017 following the success of a 10-minute online special during the U.S. elections where cast members reunited to urge Americans to vote. Season 9 will be composed of 12 episodes.
Although the cast reunited in support for democratic candidate Hilary Clinton, it was the outcome of the election that prompted Messing to sign on for a revival series. She admitted, "I think, at least for me, the country is scared and confused, and so many things are changing very quickly… And then when we got together and we laughed, it was just so healing."
She continued, "We looked around and were like, 'You know, we need to laugh.' So we should assume other people need to laugh. So this would be a chance for us to give people a little respite, hopefully… But then also do what we have always done which is shine a light on what is happening in the world." Messing also revealed that in addition to the usual comedic storylines, the revival will also feature social and political subject matter.
According to Variety, the official trailer for season 9 showed Will, Grace, Jack (Sean Hayes), and Karen (Megan Mullally) back in action. The five-minute long trailer opens to the four exiting the office of NBC Entertainment President Bob Greenblatt.
‘Will & Grace’ revival, otherwise known as season 9, was confirmed on NBC on January 2017.
