| Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library's nine-story museum and the conservatory will be illuminated with massive projected images on Monday, September 25, for the "Light Art Grand Tour USA," a documentary on 50 landmarks in 50 states. The Light Art Grand Tour will visit some of the most iconic landmarks in the United States, including those in the original 13 states, filmed in the order in which they joined the Union. The project will begin in Delaware and culminate with exhibitions in museums and monuments in the United States and Switzerland in 2020. Following filming at Winterthur, the team will travel to Mount Vernon in Virginia for a September 27 light art show. Renowned Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter will transform the museum's exterior with light art that reflects an array of some of the most iconic images of Winterthur. He and his team of experts will use a series of projectors to display 20 to 30 images, which will be both photographed and filmed for the exhibition as well as for a documentary and book. The project will be unveiled in Switzerland in 2020, after which the exhibition will travel to museums and other landmarks throughout the United States. Hofstetter said he undertook the project, which is being sponsored by a variety of Swiss government and tourism entities as well as private organizations, to highlight the importance of the institutions to our world and the friendship between Switzerland and the United States. Winterthur was selected to represent Delaware, he said, because it is the premier museum of American decorative arts, represents an important time in U.S. history, and reflects both early America and the du Pont family's life. Because of space limitations, attendance at the light show on Monday, September 25, will be available to media and a limited number of members and guests on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is required. The event begins at 7:00 pm. Please park in the Visitor Center Parking Lot and shuttles will take you to the site of the light art show. Please contact Liz Farrell, Communications Manager to register: [email protected]; 302.888.4803.
