Universal Music Group has brought Anthropic PBC to court after accusing it of widespread copyright infringement. The lawsuit was revealed just a day after the announcement of its team-up with BandLabs Technologies to protect artists’ rights amid the growing use of artificial intelligence.
Universal Music Group, along with ABKCO Music & Records and Concord Publishing, claimed that Anthropic copied and distributed a large number of copyrighted works without proper permission from them. The group then filed a lawsuit for the alleged illegal deed of the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup.
Copyright Infringement Lawsuit Filing
According to CoinTelegraph, the suit was actually filed on Oct. 18 by Universal Music Group, Concord Publishing, and ABKCO Music & Records. They said Anthropic copied copyrighted works, including lyrics and musical compositions.
They said these works are owned or under their management, but Anthropic unlawfully used and breached their copyrights. The companies explained that Anthropic also committed copyright infringement when it trained its AI chatbot called, Claude, to copy or imitate the music pieces.
Anthropic’s Claude AI Chatbot
Universal Music Group and the others said that Anthropic’s artificial intelligence chatbot called Claude has the ability to produce identical or almost identical copies of songs. To prove their claims, the group provided samples of Claude’s work where it was able to deliver an almost word-for-word imitation of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” song piece, which is under UMG, as per Decrypt.
“Anthropic claims to be different from other AI businesses. It calls itself an AI ‘safety and research’ company, and it claims that, by training its AI models using a so-called ‘constitution,” the lawyers of the publishers wrote in the lawsuit. “It ensures that those programs are more ‘helpful, honest, and harmless, yet, despite its purportedly principled approach, Anthropic infringes on copyrights without regard for the law or respect for the creative community whose contributions are the backbone of Anthropic’s infringing service.”
