General Motors (NYSE: GM) has announced a recall affecting 3,408 vehicles after discovering that certain units were shipped without the required owner’s manuals. The recall notice, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), covers select 2026 Chevrolet Silverado models, including the Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 series trucks.
According to GM, the missing manuals put the affected vehicles in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 225, which outlines essential safety information that must be provided to vehicle owners. Without access to an owner’s manual, drivers may not have the necessary guidance on proper vehicle operation, safety features, and maintenance procedures. This lack of information could heighten the risk of misuse and potentially contribute to injuries in the event of a crash.
Owner’s manuals play a critical role in helping drivers understand towing capacities, airbag systems, child seat anchor points, dashboard indicators, and other key functions. For trucks like the Silverado—which are often used for hauling, work purposes, and off-road driving—having complete operational details is especially important for safe and efficient use.
To resolve the issue, GM has confirmed that dealerships will distribute the missing owner’s manuals to all impacted customers free of charge. Owners of the affected 2026 Silverado models are encouraged to contact their local GM dealer or check their vehicle identification number (VIN) through official recall lookup tools to determine whether their truck is included in the recall.
This recall highlights the importance of proper documentation in vehicle safety compliance and serves as a reminder for manufacturers and consumers alike to ensure all required materials are included at delivery. GM has stated it is taking corrective steps to prevent similar oversights in future production cycles.
