The United States and China are reportedly exploring the possibility of launching formal discussions on artificial intelligence, according to a Wall Street Journal report published Wednesday. The talks could become a major topic during the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing next week, signaling growing global concern over AI governance and security.
Officials from both countries are increasingly focused on the risks tied to advanced AI systems, particularly fears surrounding autonomous military weapons, unpredictable AI behavior, and cyberattacks carried out using artificial intelligence. The discussions reflect rising international pressure to establish safeguards as AI technology develops at a rapid pace.
The report stated that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to lead the American delegation in the proposed AI negotiations. China has not yet officially selected its representative for the discussions. Analysts believe the talks could mark a significant step toward cooperation between the world’s two largest economies on AI regulation and security standards.
Concerns over artificial intelligence have intensified in recent months as tech companies and governments warn about the dangers of highly advanced AI models. AI startup Anthropic recently chose not to publicly release its newest model, Mythos, citing fears that the technology could potentially enable sophisticated cyberattacks and other harmful activities if misused.
The growing use of AI in defense systems, surveillance technology, and cybersecurity has become a critical issue for global policymakers. Experts warn that without international coordination, the rapid advancement of AI could increase geopolitical tensions and create new security threats.
Investors and technology companies are also closely monitoring the potential U.S.-China AI discussions, as any agreements or regulations could significantly influence the future of the global artificial intelligence industry and financial markets.
