US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that his administration is considering asking the FBI to investigate the death of Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black man whose body was discovered on a Mississippi barrier island following a Fourth of July trip with friends.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump was asked whether he would support an independent FBI investigation into the teenager’s death. “Well, we’re looking at that. Yes, we are,” Trump said.
His remarks come after Wells’ family renewed calls this week for federal authorities to investigate the case. Their request followed a grand jury’s decision not to indict anyone in connection with the teenager’s death.
Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July weekend outing with friends from nearby Ocean Springs. His body was found on July 6 on the northwest end of Horn Island, a barrier island located off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.
The circumstances surrounding Wells’ disappearance and death have attracted national attention. While authorities have not alleged foul play, his family, civil rights leaders and others have raised questions about the handling of the investigation, including concerns over transparency and accountability.
The case has also fueled a broader discussion about disparities in the level of attention given to cases involving Black victims.
Last month, a grand jury unanimously decided against bringing criminal charges related to Wells’ death. Jackson County District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath said investigators had found no evidence supporting claims that Wells’ disappearance or death was motivated by race.
Despite the grand jury’s decision, Wells’ family continues to seek additional scrutiny from federal authorities. Trump’s comments indicate that the White House is now considering whether the FBI should become involved.
It remains unclear whether the administration will formally request an FBI investigation or what role federal authorities could play in reviewing the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death.
