'Transformers 7' cancelation: Why Paramount axed the movie series

Fans who are still looking forward to seeing Optimus Prime and his band of good robots back on the big screen are in for some bad news. The untitled “Transformers 7” that was supposedly getting released this year has been canceled by Paramount.

‘Transformers 7’: Why it was canceled?

The announcement came out in 2018, even before the sixth franchise film “Bumblebee" was released in December that year. Before Paramount announced its cancelation, “Transformers 7” was given a summer release date, and the movie was supposed to premiere last June 28.

However, the studio did not give a direct explanation of how and why they came up with that decision regarding “Transformers 7.” That leaves many fans speculating on the future of the long-running series. One of the common theories on “Transformers 7’s” cancelation was the box office performance of its predecessor “The Last Knight” in 2017.

Not including “Bumblebee,” the sixth main installment ranked the lowest in terms of global ticket sales after raking in over $605.4 million. Some fans are also inclined to think that Michael Bay’s exit from the movie franchise might have contributed to Paramount’s decision to vacate “Transformers 7’s” summer 2019 release date.

Bay directed all six films and served as one of the producers for “Bumblebee.” Note though that Bay has had several previous pronouncements about leaving the franchise. But his decision appeared to be final when he posted an open letter to fans referring to “The Last Knight” as his “final chapter” in the movie series.

Is there still a chance for ‘Transformers 7’ to be made?

Like with Bay’s parting words, many fans and reports are still leaving some space of hope that this is not the end yet for the film franchise. Without the final word from Paramount, there is a slight chance that “Transformers 7” was not totally canceled but was only postponed or taking a new direction.

“The Last Knight’s” plot made it seem like a prequel as it uncovers the origins of the robots. But the movie also ended in a way that would permit a direct sequel. On the other hand, the resources for “Transformers 7” could also be put into a slightly new path as “Bumblebee 2” was reportedly being planned shortly after its December 2018 release.
