‘This Is Us’ season 2 is expected to return on NBC with a lighter tone compared to the first season as teased by the show’s executive producers. Meanwhile, Milo Ventimiglia addressed his character Jack’s “painful” fight scene with Mandy Moore’s Rebecca in the final episode of season 1 during a recent panel.
According to CNN, co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker hinted that the much-anticipated second season of NBC’s drama television series will be lighter in tone compared to its premiere season. Aptaker said, "People call the show a dramedy but we're going to lean into the [comedy] a little more."
Co-showrunner Elizabeth Berger chimed in saying, "We were talking to [creator] Dan [Fogelman] for actually a few hours today about Season 2 and we kept pitching things and then we'd say, 'That's too sad! Let's lighten up a little… We definitely want to find that balance for sure.”
The series created by Fogelman followed the lives of the Pearson family, spanning numerous decades. The show garnered positive reviews from critics since its release on NBC last September 2016.
In the season 1 finale, titled "Moonshadow," Chrissy Metz’ character Kate Pearson told her fiancé Toby (Chis Sullivan) that she intended to pursue a career in singing. This mirrored her mother Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) passion for the trade. She also admitted that she blamed herself for the death of her father Jack (Milo Ventimiglia).
When pressed for details of Jack’s passing, Metz replied, "We don't know the answers but we'll know eventually… More will be revealed."
Meanwhile, Ventimiglia and Moore discussed the challenges of the finale’s fight scene between Jack and Rebecca during the panel. According to Variety, the co-stars admitted that the scene was “painful” to shoot. Ventimiglia said, “Even the little moments where we’ve had to snip back and forth at one another we recover pretty quickly, but this one hurt. It was painful to have to truly separate myself during the course of that scene and defend Jack in a way and not sympathize with what Rebecca was saying, because that was necessary for the process.”
The finally ended its first season run on March 14, with the episode putting focus on Jack and Rebecca’s struggle to repair their marriage.
‘This Is Us’ season 2 has been renewed by NBC but no official air date has been announced as of the present. However, the series is expected to return sometime in the fall.
