Fans are expecting “The Winds of Winter” to arrive as “Game of Thrones” has concluded already. In fact, it has been months since HBO released its final episode so it’s time for the book to arrive.
It has been eight years since the fifth book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” was published thus the sixth novel which is “TWOW” is apparently long delayed. George RR Martin gave at least three publishing dates in the past seven years but he failed to fulfill them so he announced that he would refrain from giving dates because he is only disappointing the fans.
New publishing date set by GRRM
However, this year, when he was invited by New Zealand airlines to visit their country so he can finish “The Winds of Winter” in the midst of serene surroundings, he declined the invitation but surprisingly revealed a publication date. The 70-year-old stated this detail via his Not a Blog site in May.
He wrote that “The Winds of Winter” will be in his hands when he attends the WorldCon in New Zealand next year. The event is set to take place on July 29 to Aug. 2, 2020, thus these are the assumed publishing dates for “TWOW.” The question now is, will Martin fulfill his promise this time.
Why Martin can’t say a specific date of release
Despite hinting on the book’s release date, GRRM did not give a precise date and this is due to many factors. One is, he is unsure if he can complete the book on a given date. He can release the book any time in July, August or even September since he only said that the book will be “in his hands” at the WorldCon 2020.
Martin confirmed that he still has many chapters to polish so it means he needs time to write and edit “The Winds of Winter” and he does not know when exactly he will be done. Moreover, as Screen Rant mentioned, Martin is not finished writing yet because apart from being busy, his story somehow evolved and it has now gone far from his original story idea and “Game of Thrones” has something to do with this. The plot is now more complicated and he is struggling to shorten the story for “TWOW.”
In any case, once “The Winds of Winter” is published, it will be easier for the seventh and last book in “ASOIAF” to be written and released. The final novel called “A Dream of Spring” may possibly come in two to three years.
