“The Walking Dead” season 9 will show Negan escaping his prisoner status and his return to a familiar place. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that a fan-favorite arc from the comic book series is happening later in the season.
The trailer for “The Walking Dead” season 9 mid-season premiere shows that the first place Negan goes to after escaping is the Sanctuary that he fittingly calls home. Negan has always been the scary antagonist but with the introduction of the Whisperers, the viewers might see him take a back seat for a while.
There is always a threat with Negan around but showrunner Angela Kang told Entertainment Weekly that he will be using his newfound freedom to go "on an adventure of his own." Another teaser for the return of “The Walking Dead” season 9 says Negan “revisits his past.” And Kang also confirmed that flashback scenes will be a recurring theme to help viewers understand the main players of the Whisperers, the new survivors, and Negan.
“[Flashbacks] will be used, I’ll say, it’s more than once. It’s a little different each time. It’s something that tells specific pieces of backstory that I think are useful to understanding who some of our characters are,” Kang said about the upcoming episodes of “The Walking Dead” season 9.
Kang also revealed in the same interview that the second half of “The Walking Dead” season 9 will touch on the story of the Harvest Festival. It is also commonly known as “the fair” among comic book fans.
Fans can read about The Fair at the comic book series Issue 142 but Kang will certainly put her own spin to it for “The Walking Dead” season 9. To have a bit of idea about the festival, think of the infamous Red Wedding in “Game of Thrones.” The wedding is the festival, the Kingdom and Alexandria are the Starks, and the Whisperers are the Boltons and the Freys.
It would also not hurt to expect some jaw-dropping deaths at The Fair. In the original story in the comic book, Ezekiel (Khary Payton) was one of the major characters who died at the Whisperers’ attack. But it is still a mystery if the TV series will adopt this part of the story as well. “The Walking Dead” season 9 will return on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
