“The Walking Dead” season 9 is filled with major changes for the zombie apocalypse-themed TV series. Regarding Daryl (Norman Reedus), in particular, fans will be hearing his voice more in the upcoming installment.

The frequency of hearing Daryl speak some lines had been a lingering topic even before “The Walking Dead” season 9. But with a lot of changes happening in this installment, Daryl’s character is also going through some development.

Speaking with Extra at the “The Walking Dead” season 9 premiere event, Reedus confirmed that his character’s voice will be heard more often than the fans are used to. “I talk a lot more than I did last season,” the actor revealed.

However, having more lines in “The Walking Dead” season 9 does not necessarily mean having greater responsibilities. With Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) leaving in the upcoming episodes, someone has to fill in their shoes.

Fans think that since Daryl has been on this journey as long as Rick and Maggie have been, he is the obvious choice to take over Rick’s leadership role. Reedus said he has read about this theory about “The Walking Dead” season 9 on the internet. But the actor said it is not going to happen.

“I’m not [the new Rick Grimes], I’m Daryl. I’m number 20 on the call sheet, I’m gonna stay number 20 on the call sheet,” Reedus insisted about his role in “The Walking Dead” season 9.

The 49-year-old actor explained that Daryl is not the type to “give an inspirational speech” and it actually makes sense. It might be quite unnatural for Daryl to totally change overnight and suddenly become the talkative, leader type of person just because Rick is leaving in “The Walking Dead” season 9.

Having very little to say is a trait embedded in who Daryl is. It can be recalled that “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman once described him as “very introverted.” He has his own ways of showing emotions, which is also why fans were quite disappointed when he did not have a lot to say when Carl (Chandler Riggs) left the show.

However, since Daryl will go through subtle changes, maybe he will have a much longer farewell message once Rick leaves in “The Walking Dead” season 9. The series, under the new showrunner Angela Kang, will return on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
