‘The Walking Dead’ Season 9 Air Date, Plot, Characters: Norman Reedus Says Daryl Is Not Built to Be a Leader

“The Walking Dead” Season 9 is going to be the end for Rick (Andrew Lincoln). While his exit is undoubtedly going to be soul-crushing for longtime fans of the post-apocalyptic drama, it’s even more so in real life, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Before Lincoln’s exit in “The Walking Dead” Season 9, the cast of the show penned heartfelt farewell notes to the British actor. Each one has its unique message but the one by Norman Reedus – the actor playing Daryl – is probably the one that stood out because of how close he was to Lincoln. He recently revealed that both of them had made a pact of not leaving the series, to see it through to its end.

Reedus said that he was one of the very first to know Lincoln’s decision of walking out of the post-apocalyptic drama and said he tried to talk Lincoln out of his decision. Ultimately, the British actor chose to leave, citing family matters as the reason. As such, “The Walking Dead” Season 9 will have Daryl transition from a reliable right-hand man to the leader of the community that the group has become.

It will be tough for the character since he wasn’t written to be a leader but rather is a silent trustworthy follower ready to do anything for the good of the group. And that’s the thing. While Daryl is protective of the original members of the crew, he doesn’t care all that much for the new additions to their ranks. This is why the tracker will have a hard time putting everyone in line in “The Walking Dead” Season 9, something that’s already been previewed in the teaser footage.

“Now … the building of the community and the group has never been a Daryl thing. It's not him. You take care of your immediate family, and that's it,” Reedus said. This admission doesn’t bode well for the community that Rick is going to leave behind, especially now that dissent is brewing within the large ensemble.

Whatever the case, Lincoln is out of “The Walking Dead” Season 9 and Daryl will have to take his friend’s mantle whether he likes it or not. The next installment is slated to premiere on Oct. 7, where it will have a time jump following the events that took place in the previous season.
