When the latest season of “The Mandalorian” was released, it ended with a surprise announcement but not of “The Mandalorian” season 3. Disney+ is getting another “Star Wars” title, which may have confused some fans about the future of the series that introduced the so-called Baby Yoda.

‘The Mandalorian’ season 3 release date: Here’s when it’s likely to premiere

When the season 2 finale’s end credits rolled, the release of the premiere of a new Disney+ series called “The Book of Boba Fett” was announced. So it is understandable if some fans thought it would serve as the official continuation, and would then replace “The Mandalorian” season 3. That is only partially true, though.

Jon Favreau clarified in an interview with Good Morning America that “The Mandalorian” season 3 is still in the works and will be a separate project from “The Book of Boba Fett.” The latter now has a separate page on the Star Wars website and is clearly labeled as a “new series.”

However, the two shows do share the same timeline and “The Book of Boba Fett” will practically serve as the continuation of the events from “The Mandalorian” season 2. The new series will star Temuera Morrison as the titular character while Ming-Na Wen will portray Fennec Shand, who is the companion of the bounty hunter.

That also means “The Mandalorian” season 3 will not premiere anytime before the new show. With “The Book of Boba Fett” confirmed to be released in December 2021 and “The Mandalorian” season 3 only entering production next year, fans might have to wait until holiday 2022

‘The Mandalorian’ season 3 plot: What to expect

Given that “The Book of Boba Fett” happens in the same timeline as “The Mandalorian,” what happened in the season 2 finale might not exactly where season 3 would pick up. However, the way things ended between Grogu and The Mandalorian could be a good starting point for the next season.

It can be recalled that The Mandalorian allowed Grogu to be separated from him so he could go with R2-D2 and the Jedi Luke Skywalker. Grogu intends to train, and how he will improve from this could be crucial to the main plot of “The Mandalorian” season 3.
