While the show started as a simulation torturing its characters for being horrible people, “The Good Place” Season 3 brings the scene to Earth. The subjects were given a second chance at life and prove that they can be good, moral individuals. However, all of this could be for nothing since the characters lost their memory of the experience and have no idea about their mission. [Spoilers Ahead].
As Radio Times notes, the first two seasons of the show took place in what is referred to as “The Bad Place.” Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) and her companions were basically in a simulation where they were tricked into thinking that they were in “The Good Place.” By the time “The Good Place” Season 3 comes around, though, events unfold that led to the characters being brought back to Earth.
There, they will live once again and given the chance to prove that they are worth sending to the real “The Good Place.” There’s just one catch: they have no memory of this condition. As such, they will need the help of their former captor Michael (Ted Danson) in order to succeed. In fact, in a teaser for “The Good Place” Season 3, the demon is seen trying to prevent the deaths of those in his charge.

For those who might be in doubt with regards to the authenticity of the characters’ presence on Earth, it’s been confirmed that it is not a simulation. Series creator Michael Shur had already spoken to Rolling Stone about this concern and said that Eleanor and the gang really are alive on Earth. Now, it’s just a matter of watching events unfold in “The Good Place” Season 3, which premieres on Sept. 27.
