Based on how everyone is set up, it’s clear that Leonard just gave Sheldon the bad news that terribly upsets him while working on something important. Considering his subsequent reaction to hearing the details, some are already speculating that his work might have been made obsolete. Granted, it could also be something else that is equally as bad for Sheldon. As CarterMatt notes, it would have to have been really unfortunate for the physicist to break his whiteboard as he does in this episode.
