“The Big Bang Theory” Season 12 is going to be the last season for the nerdy sitcom, as confirmed by its mother network, CBS. The decision is tied to the fact that the cast’s current contract will coincide with the final days of the show, Digital Spy reported.
Fans were already treated to the Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) nuptials in the last season’s finale. Now, “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12 will focus on the nerdy couple’s journey as husband and wife.
The plot that writers want to incorporate this season will highlight Sheldon’s intelligence. Sure, they have already established him as someone who is brilliant, but they feel he hasn’t really gotten a “win” as far as the big picture is concerned. As such, he will be given a success story in the form of Sheldon expounding on his discovery of super asymmetry in “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12.
"We've talked for years about how smart Sheldon is and we've seen it some too, but it was important for us to give him a big win and actually show that he is as smart as we've said he is all this time," showrunner Steve Holland said. "That is going to be a fun and interesting story to play with, especially with him and Amy doing this as a team and married couple." The premiere episode of “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12 has already begun, with the second episode set to explore the mysterious gift given by Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco).
Unfortunate as it is that the beloved sitcom is ending, it seems that Parson himself isn’t willing to reprise his role for more seasons. CBS itself was reportedly trying to renegotiate two more seasons but Parson declined, opting instead to say goodbye to the show. After hearing that “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12 will be the final installment, Cuoco said that the news broke her heart, adding that she would’ve loved to keep doing the show for 20 more years.
Following the announcement, the actress made a heartfelt Instagram post where she thanked the fans, crew, and cast for including her in this amazing journey. The second episode of “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12 will air on Sept. 27.
