‘The Americans’ season 5’s episode 3, titled “The Midges,” is set to follow Philip and Elizabeth as they deal with issues close to home. They are set on revealing more truths about their family business to Paige.
The synopsis for episode 3 posted on TV Guide reads, “Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) tell Paige (Holly Taylor) more about the family business, but pressing new questions arise when an operation takes a ghastly and unexpected turn. Elsewhere: a sensitive package jeopardizes Oleg's (Costa Ronin) life back home.”
The previous episode, titled “Pests,” followed Elizabeth head to Illinois to do an errand for Gabriel (Frank Langella) and track down Morozov. According to the recap posted on Celebrity Dirty Laundry, Elizabeth then discovered that midges were the reason why crops traded with the Soviet Union were received damaged. She and Philip also considered whether Morozov was better off dead and begin to bond with Tuan (Ivan Mok).
Family drama also continued to hound the Jennings household when Paige found herself dealing with the complications of her situation. In the upcoming episode, Philip and Elizabeth will attempt to tell their daughter more about their family business.
The couple has been having difficulties with Paige dating Matthew (Danny Flaherty), considering that their union could end in disaster. They decided to take a different approach with her after realizing that she will see Matthew no matter what the consequences.
During a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actress Holly Taylor teased that Paige had her own intentions for Matthew. When asked if Paige was just using him to get some intelligence from the FBI or if she was genuinely attracted to him romantically, Taylor revealed, “…it's a little bit of both. And, as teasers for season five show Paige continuing a relationship with Matthew, perhaps knowing what she does about her parents makes her feel like she can push the boundaries as a teenager.”
She continued, "I think even in season one, she was attracted to Matthew Beeman, so there's definitely some of that in there… But I think also she kind of sees it as like maybe I could get away with doing this because I can use him as a source and I can get my parents to support me. But they don't really see it that way, so it's very complicated for her.”
‘The Americans’ season 5’s episode 3, titled “The Midges,” is scheduled to air on March 21, 2017 on FX. It was directed by Stefan Schwartz and written by Tracey Scott Wilson. It will be followed by episode 4, titled "What's the Matter with Kansas?," scheduled to be released on March 28 and directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton.
