The refugee crisis is still in an ember stage after heating up a few months ago, with the US having a rather schizophrenic approach to the matter. In order to help the people in dire need of protection, a proven super artificial intelligence lawyer that was able to put 160,000 cases of parking fines to rest is entering the stage. What’s more, the help it provides is free of charge.
The AI in question is called DoNotPay, which is basically “The World’s First Robot Lawyer” as described by its website. It was created by Joshua Browder, a Stanford student and he made it as a means of providing free aid to those who are in need of lawyers but either can’t afford one or don’t know enough to get into the transaction.
During its first foray into the legal field, Browder’s robot lawyer actually managed to overturn over 160,000 parking tickets that were issued to people who couldn’t afford to pay them or believe that they were fined unfairly. Now, the AI is being used to help refugees finally get into countries that have thus far been resistant to their plight.
In an interview with The Guardian, Browder emphasizes how important this service is and what it took for him to actually develop it. Creating an AI that is able to provide legal assistance is hard enough. Making sure that the clients can actually use it is another matter altogether.
The AI is available right now as a Facebook Messenger chatbot, which makes it highly accessible to pretty much anyone. This is why Browder chose it in the first place.
“It works with almost every device, making it accessible to over a billion people,” he explained.
Of course, the chatbot creator is not about to stop there. He is also hoping to expand the AI’s reach to include WhatsApp and other messaging platforms.
