Following the same guiding principles that have defined the Straus’ organic dairy product portfolio, the new organic chocolate milk is minimally processed with only five ingredients. No stabilizers or emulsifiers are used, and it’s sold in reusable glass 32-ounce bottles. Knowing consumers are seeking ways to reduce sugar and empty calories in their diet, Straus’ organic chocolate milk contains 38 percent less total sugars than other organic chocolate milk brands in the market today.1 Straus chocolate milk is also a good source of protein with 16 grams per serving which, along with milk’s natural fat, provides satiety in a healthier treat option.
Taste the Difference
Most milks are ultra-pasteurized to increase shelf-life which involves “cooking” the milk at a high temperature. Straus’ organic milk is crafted with a high temperature short pasteurization method which helps preserve the authentic flavor of the milk. Straus milk is never ultra-pasteurized.
“The high-quality flavor of our milk starts at the organic family farms, with sustainable land stewardship and good animal welfare practices. In 1994, when we first offered organic milk in glass bottles, I knew that I wanted to create products consistent with the values we apply to our organic farming practices,” said Albert Straus, CEO and founder of Straus Family Creamery. “All of Straus Family Creamery’s products, including the chocolate milk, retain the quality of the milk sourced daily from the nine family-operated organic dairy farms working with us in Marin and Sonoma Counties in Northern California.”
Organic Chocolate Milk Grows in Popularity
According to SPINS Natural channel data, organic chocolate milk sales are outpacing the milk category as a whole, posting 25 percent dollar sales growth in the Northern California region in 2016.
Straus’ organic chocolate milk is made with five ingredients: homogenized organic whole milk, organic cane sugar, Fair Trade Certified™ organic cocoa powder, organic vanilla extract, and a lactase enzyme. With no emulsifiers or stabilizers such as carrageenan or gums, the chocolate milk has natural separation. This requires an extra shake or two of the bottle to blend the ingredients before drinking.
The suggested retail price of the 32-ounce quart of organic chocolate milk is $3.99. Look for Straus Family Creamery organic chocolate milk at your natural or specialty grocer or food co-op in Northern California. Distribution in Southern California and other western states is anticipated this Fall.
