Steam Takes Down School Shooting-Themed Video Game Following Widespread Online Petition

Valve has removed an upcoming school shooting-themed video game from Steam, the company’s digital distribution platform for PC gaming.

The video game in hot water is plainly titled “Active Shooter,” which is the same term law enforcement officers use to refer to a suspect still on the loose after open firing in a place packed with a crowd of people.

In this video game, players will be given the option to act as an active shooter inside a school or as a S.W.A.T. team member responding to the active shooting scene.

An online petition on Change.org was put up after “Active Shooter” was added on Steam’s platform in preparation for its actual release on June 6. As of this writing, the video game can no longer be searched or purchased through Steam.

In 2018 alone, there have already been 23 school shootings recorded across the United States, sparking a national debate about gun violence and whether or not a stricter gun control policy is needed. While these issues are yet to be resolved, introducing a video game simulating these horrifying events certainly does not help.

This is also probably the reason why the online petition against “Active Shooter” being put on a widely used platform like Steam gained massive support within just a few days. As of this writing, over 183,000 online petitioners have signed to call on Valve to take action, which the company already did.

Meanwhile, Valve also confirmed via a statement to Deadline that they have also removed the game’s developer, Revived Games, and publisher, ACID, from Steam.

“This developer and publisher is, in fact, a person calling himself Ata Berdiyev, who had previously been removed last fall when he was operating as ‘[bc]Interactive’ and ‘Elusive Team,’” Valve stated further. “Ata is a troll, with a history of customer abuse, publishing copyrighted material, and user review manipulation.”

However, even though Steam is known as one of the largest PC video game distributors, the reality is there are other platforms where the game “Active Shooter” may pop up again.
