Steam had a pretty good year, with digital game revenues bursting through the roof. To show which games performed best in 2016, Valve’s retail platform put together a list of the highest grossing titles in categorized them accordingly. As expected, the top spot was taken by behemoths like Fallout 4, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and the internet’s punching bag of the year, No Man’s Sky.
Although Steam didn’t provide any figures to show which title earned the most throughout the course of the year, it did organize the games based on a descending order of categories, Cinemablend reports. These would be Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, in that order.
The games that were included in the Platinum class consist of a mix of heavy-hitter AAA video game titles such as the ones mentioned above as well as Valve’s own creation, the online multiplayer shooting game, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. In the Gold category, it would seem that there is more diversity, with such indie titles as Stellaris, ARK: Survival Evolved, and Stardew Valley being included.
As Kotaku notes, this is the first time that the online digital retail store decided to publish such a list with so many items. It also provides some context as to the kind of gaming environment surrounding the Steam community, regardless of whether or not the exact figures of the sales were published.
Sure, the majority of the spots in the Platinum category were given to major titles. However, from Gold and below, it’s clear that PC gamers are also incredibly supportive of indie titles. More than that, the list showed that some AAA couldn’t simply rely on name-recognition or major production values since titles like Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Dishonored 2 were unable to go past Silver and Bronze respectively.
