The PlayStation 4 virtual reality set is already the most affordable unit in the market without counting mobile versions. However, with the recent price cuts that both Oculus and HTC did for the Rift and the Vive, Sony could hardly afford to be complacent. As a result, the company followed the price cutting trend but offered it through a new type of bundle.
Oculus recently gave the Rift a $200 discount, which lowered the costs to $399, which is what the PS4 VR headset original cost. HTC did the same thing with the Vive, putting the price tag at $599. Now, Sony is offering a bundle that includes the PS4 VR unit along with the PlayStation Camera for only $399. Those who want the PlayStation Move controllers thrown in can spend $449, down from $499, PC Mag reports.
By lower the price of its bundles, Sony maintains the PS4 VR’s position as the cheapest high-end VR headset on the market, capable of allowing VR gaming with high fidelity and pixel quality. The timing of the price cut makes a lot of sense for two main reasons. One is the fact that its chief competitors are doing the same thing and two is the upcoming holiday shopping rush.
It’s only natural that Sony would want to make its VR product the most attractive prospect in the market, especially to parents who might not really know what to look for. By combining the original PS4 console and the bundles, customers would be paying no more than $700 for the whole package. That’s significantly less than if buyers went with Rift or Vive from scratch.
These bundles will start being available at retailers on September 1st, Sony noted on the PlayStation Blog. Then again, it’s worth mentioning that delays are normal in these situations.
