Song Joong Ki, Song Hye Kyo 2018: ‘DOTS’ Actor Confirmed to Host 2018 MAMA Awards; Will Wife Grace the Event Too?

Song Joong Ki has been confirmed to be one of the official hosts of the 2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards that will take place in Hong Kong at the Asia World Expo Arena on Dec. 14. This would be the “Descendants of the Sun” actor’s third time to host the said grand music awards ceremony, however, his wife Song Hye Kyo will not be in this year’s ceremony.

According to The Korea Times, the 2018 MAMA Awards will feature a list of popular K-pop groups and artists. Those who were sure to attend are BTS, GOT7, Wanna One, Seventeen, Momoland, Tiger JK and his rapper wife Yoon Mirae, The Quiett, Palo Alto, Chagmo, Swings, “Show Me the Money 777” winner Nafla and Roy Kim. The award presenters this year include popular actors and actresses like Kim So Hyun, Hong Jong Hyun, Lee Ki Woo, Ji Soo, Jung Chaeyeon, Kang Seung Hyun and more. Moreover, it was said that Janet Jackson will also perform in the event.

The 2018 MAMA celebration is probably the largest in Mnet’s history and it is called the MAMA Week. It kicked off on Dec. 10 in Seoul’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza then tonight, Dec. 12, it will continue with a show in Japan’s Saitama Super Arena. Finally, on Dec. 14, the awards ceremony will take place and conclude in Hong Kong.

“While You Were Sleeping” actor Jung Hae In hosted the MAMA premiere while Park Bo Gum will host tonight’s event in Japan. As mentioned, earlier, Song Joong Ki will take the rein for the finale.

Explaining about the concept of this year’s MAMA awards, Kim Ki Woong, head of Mnet division, said during a press conference, “Celebrating the 10th anniversary, the concept of 2018 MAMA is the reinterpretation of ‘The Legend of Icarus,’ a story of bravery and unwavering passion that serves as an inspiration to all those hoping to fulfill their dreams.”

He added, “Our goal is to create a platform so that K-pop and Asian music can infiltrate the global mainstream music industry.”

Meanwhile, although Song Joong Ki is an actor, he had hosting jobs in the early part of his career. He was one of “Music Bank’s” emcees in 2009 and he was on the show for about a year. Coincidentally, Song Hye Kyo also hosted “Music Bank” for five months in 2000.
