BROOMFIELD, CO, Oct. 18, 2017 -- SiILion Inc., an advanced lithium-ion battery developer, announced today that it has received a $695k award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) division of Industrial Innovation & Partnership (IIP), to apply its battery technology, with high-loading silicon anode and electrolyte technology, into a commercially viable cylindrical cell.
SiILion’s technology delivers a breakthrough in high-energy batteries by simultaneously incorporating high-loaded silicon anodes, nickel-rich NMC cathodes, and a non-flammable ionic liquid electrolyte. These batteries offer a dramatic increase in both energy density and specific energy in lithium-ion batteries, while lowering costs by 30% and increasing safety.
SiILion has scaled its battery’s market-leading performance in pouch format cells for prototype production and commercial evaluation, proving the easy integration into existing manufacturing. As markets and manufacturing partners have requested the cylindrical cell format, industry will shortly have this high-performance platform available for broader product applications.
“While we are currently scaling the SiILion technology into high-performing pouch cell designs, this NSF grant enables the company to more rapidly adapt this technology for high performance cylindrical cells as well,” said Tyler Evans, Chief Technology Officer at SiILion.
SiILion is a client company of Innosphere, Colorado’s leading technology incubator supporting high-growth companies in engineering and scientific-based industries. “SiILion’s technology provides a major increase to Li-ion battery performance, addressing the rapidly growing market for higher performing batteries,” said Mark Gorham, Innosphere program director. “I’m excited to see the commercial impact this SBIR grant will have in their prototyping and scaled demonstration of their product for commercialization.”
